Are you feeling everything Empath?

As an emotional, intuitive and physical empath, it can be easy for me to become overloaded. Being sensitive to energy, sounds, people, smells and the surrounding environment, as well as feeling everything so intensely, it’s clear why one gets overwhelmed by it all.  Sound familiar?

These days it’s difficult to not be affected with all that is going on in the world and in our country.  Even Mother Nature has had enough, with droughts, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, erupting volcanoes… you get the picture.  It’s been constant… political upheaval, attacks on innocent people, the media, fear, doom and gloom has been rampant.  We are being bombarded every day in every way with all this icky gunk.  Many are becoming numb to it all, while others (empaths) are feeling all of it.  It’s sickening, draining, and can feel like the life is being sucked out of you.

So what can be done to help prevent being overloaded? There are numerous strategies that can be applied to help in prevention. I’m fortunate that in my early 20’s, one of my mentors educated me about protecting myself, as I was unknowingly and unconsciously,  taking on feelings and emotions of other people.  So much so, it was difficult to discern what was mine and what wasn’t.  As a result, I became sick several times with empathic illnesses such as anxiety attacks, chronic fatigue, depression and social anxiety.  If you’ve ever experienced this, then you know how much it sucks.

At first I was shocked that I was taking on other’s emotions and physical ailments.  Then it made total sense, as most of the time that I felt ill, was around others who were having a difficult time, who had some dis-ease in their body or simply negative people/situations.  How can this prevented?

I found that meditation and shielding daily extremely beneficial in preventing “burnout”.  To test this theory, because back then, I needed proof. I would at times neglect to shield before going out in public, or stop meditating to see how I felt.  What I found was that when I practiced self-care (meditating, shielding), I was able to stay centered and grounded, without feeling overwhelmed.  When I didn’t, I was simply a mess!

Over the years, I discovered other ways to protect myself, here are some techniques that I use:

  • Earthing, which is the practice of connecting to the earth, barefoot on the grass, hugging a tree, spending time in nature, or visualizing myself as a majestic tree with my roots (feet, toes) going deep within the earth to drink in the energy of Mother Earth. All of these are helpful.
  • Water, taking an epsom salt bath is detoxifying.  Add 1 to 2 cups to a bath and soak for 20 minutes.  Allow your troubles of the day to float away.  The epsom salt also has magnesium which aids in the relaxation process.  Or try apple cider vinegar bath, add 1 cup of raw, unfiltered cider vinegar to your bath.  The vinegar will help release any negativity in your energy field.  Experiment with baths as a way to detoxify, adding essential oils or even gemstones to the water while you soak.
  • Plenty of rest and sleep, the body can heal itself, yet it needs downtime and rest to recover.  Be sure to get enough sleep.
  • Smudge your space and self as it’s cleansing and uplifting.  The Native Americans have always used smudge (the burning of herbs) to cleanse the mind, body and spirit.  I smudge my space on a regular basis and myself especially when I feel edgy. White sage is my go to, but I also love sweet grass and Palo Santo wood.
  • Setting boundaries is important. Without boundaries, some people will continue to push or pull until you reach a breaking point.  Why wait until then? By setting clear, respectful boundaries it’s healthier for everyone, especially you.
  • Utilize  aromatherapy as a way to soothe, calm and ground. Essential oils such as lavender, frankincense, clary sage, lemon, rosemary, and sandalwood are good for this. A diffuser is a great way to infuse your environment with these scents.
  • Wearing, carrying or having specific gemstones or crystals nearby to help with protection. Stones I’ve found essential to my protection and grounding are: rainbow moonstone, lapis lazuli, black tourmaline, amber, and clear quartz.  Other grounding and protective stones include: smokey quartz, black obsidian, apache tear, hematite, turquoise, red jasper, tiger’s iron, fluorite, citrine, garnet, amethyst and tiger’s eye.  Always use your intuition to select the best stones for you.
  • Use a salt lamp. Himalayan salt lamps are chunks of Himalayan salt, hollowed out with a bulb inserted inside.  When they are on, they glow pinkish.  Salt lamps help charge the air with negative ions.  Other added benefits are they help with sleep, allergies, low energy, asthma, nervousness, seasonal affectiveness disorder and more.  They also help to neutralize the effects of emf’s.
  • In order to refresh, rejuvenate and practice self-care, downtime, specifically alone time is necessary.  This is something I learned was essential over the years.  It’s how we heal ourselves.
  • Stop watching the news, take breaks from social media, disconnect from the press.  Doing this will help immensely.  I stopped watching TV a few months after 9/11.  I had to, for my health and safety.  Now after being away from traditional TV for so long, I see right through the programming and how advertisers and the media in general are brainwashing consumers.

By applying these strategies, you will feel better.  Discover what works best for you and explore other ways of self-care. As a sensitive empathic person, take charge of your health and well-being. Be gentle with yourself.  Most of all, know, you are not alone.

And, if you want help, I am here in service to assist you as a coach and healer.

#Me too… It’s time to be seen!

Last week, I started to see the #Me too posts all over Facebook.  I was not surprised at how widespread this is… sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, molestation, rape, it’s truly rampant! Stop and think about this for a moment, you or someone you know has been sexually abused at some point in their life.  Digest that for a moment, let it really sink in. It’s alarming isn’t it?

For the most of my life, I have been healing from sexual abuse that started at a very young age. This truth about me certainly was something that I would delete if I could. I imagine this to be like the old tv show Bewitched, where the main character, Samantha, who was a “witch” would wiggle her nose making things vanish.  Yet as much as I healed, this trauma was still very much apart me.

I finally realized over a year ago, that I had been running from this all my life.  Did I really think I could get away from it? I was angry that after all this time, there were still parts of me that still had to heal.  I dug in (on my own and with help from others), to unravel old patterns and beliefs. This left me feeling vulnerable and raw in the process.  Yet I was understanding myself more and more, and how old programs or patterns that I unconsciously created as a survival mechanism were no longer necessary, in fact they were holding me back from experiencing life as fully as I wanted to. Unconsciously, unknowingly, these “programs” would continue to run in my life.  Until I had an epiphany, which was simply, that I could choose to change.

Breaking those programs was hard, painful, uncomfortable and freaking scary at times. Yet, also powerful, as I was choosing to grow.  In that growing, I came to understand that all the guilt and shame that I carried for years, was never mine to begin with.  I had done nothing wrong. There was nothing for me to be ashamed of.   While this will always be a part of me, my past does not define me, however it certainly set me on a path to become who I am today.

I never really considered that because of these experiences, there were blessings to be grateful for, such as… I am strong, compassionate, kind, caring… I am also sensitive and passionate. I am forgiving, something that after so many years of being angry, I finally understood what Buddha meant when he said, “Holding on to Anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.”  Letting  go and forgiving set me free from the self-imposed prison in my mind.

Truth is, I love who I am now and how I continue to evolve.  I strive to live, to be in the NOW as much as possible. Fully accepting and loving all of me, the way I am – perfectly imperfect, as we all are.

The #Me too movement from my perspective is about awareness, claiming your voice, being seen, and taking back your power.  I AM, are you?

“My past has not defined me, destroyed me, deterred me, or defeated me; it has only strengthened me.” – Dr. Steve Maraboli

Today’s Reading Results 12/9/15

As promised, here’s today’s reading.

How does your choice resonate with you?  Does it apply to something currently present in your life?  How does it feel when you read your card?

A = Osiris = Father, Husband, Brother, Son – This has to do with the first person who popped into your head. Your present relationships improve as you heal feelings about your father. A deceased male loved one (Father, Husband, Brother, Son) is sending Love from Heaven.   You have recently or are about to meet a significant male partner. Practice both giving and receiving daily to help balance your male and female energy.

B = Lugh = Persistence – Keep going!  Stick with it!  Your effort  will be rewarded. Visualize your dreams already manifested. Stay positive! Overcome procrastination tendencies and take inspired action today. Commit to your dream/goals.

C = Oshun = Drink More Water – This comes as a reminder to drink more water, you body is thirsty for pure water.  Buy a water purifier. Avoid drinking soda, coffee or alcohol.  Sweat out the toxins in your body either through exercise, sweat lodge or steam bath.  Spend time near the ocean, a lake or other water element.

If you felt resistance to the result,  you may choose to meditate or ask yourself questions as to what the resistance is? Often times our resistance is something subconscious.

If the result resonated for you, how did you experience this?

transformationIt is my understanding  and knowing that change is inevitable and constant evolution.  I can choose to  embrace change or resist it. Ever hear the saying, what I resist is what persists? It is so true!  Think about it for a moment… go back in your mind to a time you were in the midst of change, maybe it was exciting, or scary, or even something in between.  You may find that when you were resistant, things didn’t go as smoothly as you’d liked.  Yet the moment you surrendered and let go, things magically fell into place and everything just flowed.

While I know this and understand this, I realize that while in the midst of change, its important to remind myself to let go, to trust in the process and know, really know that no matter what, everything is going to be fine.  Easy to say, yet it can be hard to do, of course, if I so choose.

See I also realize that I have CHOICE.  We all make choices from the moment we are awake until the time we go to sleep.  How so?  Well we choose what we eat, what we wear, where we go, etc.  In fact, we are always making choices.  Are we making the choices that are best for us? Are we in alignment with our choices?

A few months ago, I was in a position to make a choice, in a moment, in this case, to stay or go.  As I mentally checked in with myself, I asked myself, what is best for me?  What feels right to me?  Once I reached a decision on what I would do, I felt peaceful inside, which was my sign I was in alignment with the choice I was about to make. In this case, it felt good and was the right thing to do for myself. This feeling lasted for several hours, then anxiety (which is fear in disguise) made its presence known.

Fortunately, I am blessed to have very loving, encouraging and supportive people in my life.  When the fear surfaced, I immediately reached out to a dear friend who happens to also be an amazing coach.  She quickly helped me to see the reality of the situation and helped me to strategize on what I needed to do next.  She listened and gave sage advice on allowing myself to just be.  Just talking with her  calmed me allowing me to see what was, not what I perceived it to be.

That night as I reflected and checked in with myself, I realized, that I had manifested this solution.  For several years, I have desired to be a full-time entrepreneur again, yet through obligations and unconscious self sabotage, I was unable to make the leap, until, that moment three months ago.  The Universe responded to my requests and removed all perceived obstacles from my path, clearing the way for me to serve my soul purpose of helping others heal.

We are all spiritual beings having a human experience and I’ve experienced the gamut of emotions that come with change. Yet I continue to choose to embrace each emotion as it comes, sometimes I resist, and when I catch myself, I ask myself what is it that you need to learn that once you learn it you can let go?  Once I know what the learning is, I am able to let go and get back into the flow.  Which allows me to focus on what I want, rather than what I don’t want.

Do you know what you want? Upon reading this question, where does your mind go? Does it go to what you want?  Or does it go to what you don’t want? Which is it?

Next time, we we go a step further with this, bringing in the Law of Attraction.
